Spending Time With God| What I Used To Do And Why It Didn’t Work!
For lots of people learning to spend time alone with God can be a strange concept for beginners or even someone who is already a Christian. How do you talk to someone you can’t see? What do you talk about? and how do you know what to say? And how to hear God’s word?
I had all of these questions and many more too. It didn’t make sense to me and sounded more than a little strange to talk to someone I wasn’t sure could hear me? I mean, where do you start? How do you open your conversation with God? How do you know He hears you and what you are asking Him to help you with?
Before I spent regular time in God’s presence, my days were hard work, testing, frustrating, and overall a struggle. I would live in fear of the world and try and keep up with its wants and needs instead of listening to what I needed. My negative feelings and difficult circumstances would overrun my day.

Hi, My Name Is Gem
I am a busy Christain wife & mama, and I have been married for the last 15 years to my best friend. We have four amazingly individual children together, 16, 14, and 4 (x2). Long story made short, we have lived on two different continents, traveled halfway around the world with our children, and back again.
Experiencing some unique cultures, languages, and people. I found God along the way too. It’s now my mission to share that journey with you and help you in your journey with God. By giving you the tools and resources to help you grow closer to Christ Jesus.
I know the struggles that I had when I was starting my journey with the Lord. How I battled with prayer, reading the Bible as well as understanding it. Learning how to practice praise and worship with God, praying for others, serving in the church, and so much more…
What I found is no two journeys are the same. They are as unique as the individual is, and that is why it is my privilege to help you learn about God’s plan and what & why he has called you to do. As well as to help you become a vibrant woman in Christ.
Each of us has a god-given gift or talent that he created us with for His purpose. And if this is your first time visiting Mama & The Word, put a heart in the comment box below so I can officially welcome you to the community.

5 Reasons Why We Should Spend Time With God without Feeling Lost And Overwhelmed?
As a good Christian, this is a fundamental part of faith. We believe in the father, the son, and the holy spirit.
When we accept our heavenly father into our life, we then receive the holy spirit who enters our bodies. Therefore to develop our faith, we have to spend time with God to grow as Christian women.
Like any relationship, it takes time, work, and effort, as well as a desire to spend time with someone to know them more.
From this, we can gain a lot of information to help us grow and develop as Christians. God desires to have an intimate relationship with all of us. God uses the holy spirit inside of us to connect with us in various ways.
The best way that God does this is by the following listed below:
He Speaks To Me
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves.
1 Corinthians 3:16-20 NIV
He Helps Me To Pray
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
Romans 8:26-27 NIV
He Teaches Me
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
1 John 5: 20-21 NIV
He Grows My Spiritual Health
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation
1 Peter 2: 2 NIV
He Directs My Journey With Him
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.
Isaiah 30: 21 NIV
When Should We Spend Time With God?
There is no set time to spend with God. However, we can take direction from the Bible. It gives us guidelines to follow, which can help us in our daily devotional with God.
This allows us to build our own intimate and personal relationship with Him.
A daily devotional can be any amount of time. It depends on how much time you have to spend in the word and with God.
Start small if you are unsure, and you can always increase the amount of time you spend with God as you begin to develop this daily habit.
In The Morning
This can be one of the best times to spend with God, as it says in Psalms 5:3 NIV. I like to listen to a sermon in the morning.
For easier access, I will use youtube and find an uplifting sermon to listen to while I am busy with breakfast and the children.
I can then journal later on if I don’t get time first thing as well as read my bible too. I make a conscious effort each day to spend time in the word.

Our thoughts and feelings are fresh and new in the morning. This can be an excellent time to set our requests before the Lord.
To pray and read the Bible and try and learn and understand God’s teachings.
It also allows us time to be thankful, which can have a powerful impact on any negative emotion, our mental health, and our day.
The more positive our outlook, the more powerful it can impact our day, well-being, and emotional health. It can also help us to see God’s love.
At Midday
So whether you are a busy wife, mama, grandmother, or daughter, mornings may not be the best time to commune with God for you.
However, if you can be intentional with your time in the day, then lunchtime could be an excellent alternative to find time with God and grow in His word.

At The End Of The Day
The evening can also be a good time once you are home from work, the children are in bed, and all your daily tasks are completed. It is what works for you as an individual.
You get to choose what works best for you and your routine and lifestyle. The main thing is that you get to relax in the word of God and spend time meditating on His truths. It is a great way to finish your day.

While I know, I struggle to stay awake till midnight now, there are plenty of night owls out there. Carving out this essential self-care time is much needed. You can pick any time in the evening that works for you.
I think that creating a sustainable habit and routine is more important than the amount of time that you spend, to begin with.
Once you have begun the routine, it is easier to increase the time that you give over to your newfound task.

I have found the best way to combat a physical problems, negative emotions, poor mental health, and other bad times is with God’s help. As human beings, we can allow a little thing to grow into a big thing.
Negative influences, fear, or feelings of overwhelm stress, and anxiety can lead to loss of sleep, appetite, overeating, disconnect, and other negative habits.
We can allow social media, family members, our own defense mechanisms, and other factors to affect our emotional well-being. However, you can find a safe place with God.
In a newsletter by News In Health, it commented on the links between the processing of positive or negative emotions and how it impacts our overall outlook and health.
But people need negative emotions to move through difficult situations and repsond to them appropriately in the short term. Negative emotions can get us into trouble, though, if they’re based on too much rumination about the past or ecessive worry about the future, and they’re not really related to what’s happening in the here and now
Dr. Barbara L. Fredrickson, psychologist & Expert on emotional wellness at the university of north carolina, chapel hill 2015
It continues by saying that regardless of past or present sufferings if we choose to process these emotions with a positive attitude and positive self-talk we can improve our overall well-being.
It also suggests links to poor health, our immune system, and chronic stress as factors that negatively impact our health.

Conclusion|What I Learnt From Spending Time With God?
I learned that spending more time with God gave me a new perspective on my life.
It allowed me to process frightening feelings, hard times, and bad things, and review difficult times or events that were happening or had happened.
God uses what happens to us as a way to teach and shape us.
Sometimes we may not like or enjoy what happens to us, but these events can lead us to new opportunities, skills, and relationships.
It also helped me to know and develop my relationship with God. In our time together I can reflect on the day, week, or month.
What has happened, what have I been praying for, How has this prayer helped. What has changed, improved, or been achieved?
Following God’s Direction
Spending time in His word allows me to hear God and where he is directing me.
If He is leading me in a particular direction, then this time with Him will enable me to understand what I need to do or what I need to focus on that will allow me to follow that path.
God has a purpose for me and He is showing me daily what that purpose is and how and what I should do to achieve it. I have to have patients, trust, and faith.
If I continue as He instructs me to do so, I glorify and honor Him. I don’t have to be the best; I have to do my best each day, and if I fail, I get to try again.
He gives me the grace to make mistakes, learn, grow and develop because I am perfectly imperfect just as He created me to be.
I am going to own it and love it I am His imperfectly perfect warrior. I know that God is always working for my good, even when it sometimes doesn’t feel like it at that moment.
However, each time I see something fall into place or a prayer answered it helps my faith grow and increase and this, in turn, gives me increased hope and faith for the next trial, test, or battle that comes my way.
Share With Me
I am so excited to see where this new journey takes me. It is another leap of faith, but it is a leap that I know that He wants me to take. And while I don’t always feel qualified to talk about God.
I know that He will equip me with whatever I need to Glorify His holy name.
