This post will help you learn how to pray as a beginner when you are unsure how or where to start. These 5 easy steps will help you as you start your prayer journey.

When I first started learning how to pray as a beginner, I didn’t have 5 easy steps to help me. I was very nervous about it all, and I didn’t know if I was saying the right thing or the wrong thing to God.

I knew I definitely couldn’t vocalize my prayers like other people I had heard in church. They used such beautiful words and could talk at great length and with such passion and emotion.

This just made me feel even more intimidated and self-conscience as a beginner.

What made it worse was that I had not been brought up in a Christian household, and I had little knowledge about the Bible other than what I had learned from school.

No one likes to look like a beginner, even if they are one. I think this makes us stand out more when really all we want to do is fade into the background and take it all in until we feel confident enough to join in. I think this is true for most subject matter.

How To Pray As A Beginner Using These 5 Easy Steps

The first few churches I found were not to my liking. You really do get a strong feeling when you find the right church for you. However, luckily for me, I found my place, my church, somewhere that felt safe, inviting, and friendly.

I also had a few family members, and I made some new friends at church that helped me learn simple steps to feel more confident with prayer.

Step One – Keep It Simple

Once I understood that God knows what’s in my heart and that he just wanted to have a personal relationship with me, that’s when I decided that all I needed to do was talk to Him. God is our heavenly father, and as such, we can talk to Him as our father.

He wants to interact with us, He wants a relationship with us, and most importantly, He wants the very best for us and our lives.

We can tell Him about our day, our highs, and our lows. Our fears and our joy, as He wishes to share in all that we do. God is a loving father. He is someone to be respected and honored, and we can do this by spending time with Him in prayer.

However, we must learn to make choices and decisions based on our prayers and His teachings and lessons.

Some people are gifted with beautiful words and express them in prayer for themselves and others. I still class myself as a beginner, and I am happy, but I know that I will grow in my knowledge and understanding.

Step Two – Make It A Habit

The more you spend time with God in prayer, the easier it becomes to talk to Him and build relationships. Finding a time that works for you and your schedule is great, or you can choose to make it part of your daily routine.

First thing in the morning as a way to start your day is a good habit to begin, or you can pray before you go to bed at night.

However, as you learn to pray, you will find that you can pray anytime, anywhere. You can pray on your way to work while driving in the car or walking. Now I am confident enough to pray whilst on the school run or out walking and alone.

Alternatively, you can pray while doing chores, gardening, or even doing it while working out. Whenever and wherever is entirely up to you.

So whether you start with 5 minutes each day or 5 minutes three times a day, the best thing to do is start and see what happens.

Step Three – Form A Relationship

Praying will help you grow closer to God. To build a relationship with Him by spending time with Him and His word. The more you open your heart to God and become vulnerable in His presence, the more you will learn about what and how you can change for the better.

All of our best relationships are the ones that we give our time and energy to. It is no different where the Lord is concerned. He is always available to us at any time of the day. He wants to know how we are and what we want. What has made us happy, sad, or grateful for in our lives?

Step Four – The Lord’s Prayer

This is something that I always remember from school but using The Lord’s Prayer is a great way to begin. Showing respect and honor to God is always a good way to start any conversation with Him. The Lord’s Prayer is set in the Bible.

Using this as your starting point, you can talk to Him about your hopes and dreams, fears and failures. He may then show you a different way forward, or He may be trying to show you a lesson or tell you to work through something that is holding you back within your life.

Step Five – Listen For Gods Word

God can talk to us in so many ways, but we must be willing to listen for His word. He can also use others to do His work for Him too.

The Lord may send people into your life to help you when you need it most. You must look for these opportunities that He provides for you and the ones that He will try and steer you from.

To help you with this, you can also start a Bible study or Journal to learn more about God’s word or to note down all your thoughts, emotions, or words from God.

So, in conclusion, the more you pray, even if it’s only for a short time then, the easier and the better you will become. It’s just like learning any new skill; it just takes a bit of patience and practice.

By developing this new habit, you will be able to connect with God easily; you will find comfort, guidance, and reassurance in His word.

He will help you to deal with hidden emotions and feels that we bury too. He wants the very best for us, and he does have a plan and purpose for us all. We must listen for His word.
