This post will show you how to study the bible as a beginner so that you can gain the most from your time with God and in the word.
Studying the bible as a beginner is no easy task, but you can follow a few simple steps. This will help make the process easier and more understandable and be simple to action daily.
By following these 5 simple steps, you will find that you can study your bible easily. You will also understand the biblical principles that it teaches you as you work through the books within The Bible.
This can make it simpler to implement in your day-to-day life as a new Christian woman. Or as someone wanting to learn more about The Bible.

How to study the Bible as a beginner – Step One – Prayer
Before beginning your study of The Bible, you can start with a prayer. You can pray to God to help you hear and understand His word and message in the passage or verse. So that when you are studying it, you can gain the most from the time and the word.
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Luke 24:45 NLT

How to study the Bible as a beginner – Step Two – Read
Read The Bible either by chapter, verse, book, or page? The main objective is to begin reading and build a habit of reading The Bible each day.
The best place to begin reading The Bible is in the new testament or with the Psalms. I enjoyed beginning with the Psalms as I could read a Psalm or two at a time. I could then take time to re-read the passage and see what I could learn. Or what God was trying to teach me through the verses.
You can also follow a Bible study plan to stick to a more formal guided reading plan. It can also be done as a group study too.
You have to remember that there isn’t really a right or wrong way to spend time studying The Bible. It is about building your knowledge in the word as well as developing your relationship with God. This helps you to put what you learn into action in your daily life.
You can read from the start in Genesis to the end of The Bible in Revelations. I began this way, but I found the old testament more difficult as a beginner. Starting in the New Testament or with The Psalms is a much nicer and easier introduction to The Bible.
How to study the Bible as a beginner – Step Three – Ask God
Ask the following three questions from the following passage you are reading.
- What does the verse or passage say? Make sure that you put it into context with in the story. Do you understand what God is saying to you or trying to demonstrat within the passage that you read?
- What does the passage tell you about the people within the story and what do you learn abouth them or their actions? What does this mean to you and how can you apply the lesson to yourself?

How to study the Bible as a beginner – Step Four – Action
Once you have completed your questions, the next thing to see is to apply what you have read to your life.
What was the action to take in the passage that you read? What was the sin that needed to be confessed? Can you see an error, or is God cautioning you through His teaching?
Some versers will be quicker than others to understand, or some may take more time to work through depending on how you need to process the information related to your life and circumstances. Just trust that God has a plan and a purpose for you.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11
Developing your skills in reading and interpreting the Bible will help you to find that purpose.
How to study the Bible as a beginner – Step Five – Response
You show God that you want to know Him more by responding to what you have read and learned. That you wish to develop a relationship with Him. He finds this very pleasing, and He will respond to you in some way as a sign of His happiness.
You can pray back the verse or scripture to Him, or you can journal your prayers in your Bible Journal. Praying in Scripture has great power as you are praying following the will of God.
Record any thoughts or feelings you receive from this process or anything you learn in the coming days or weeks. You can always look back in your journals as a point of reference or when you need encouragement. Also, as you grow in your faith, they can be used to help others explain and encourage them in the word.
What I have learnt from studying the Bible as a beginner with these steps.
I learned that, unlike most books, starting at the beginning isn’t always the best way to tackle this great book. It takes time and patients to work through all the books within The Bible.
You will learn something new each time you read or even re-read a verse. If you are part of a Bible study group, you will learn different things by sharing the same verse with others. You will learn their ideas and perspectives on the piece that you study.
Or you will learn something new from teachings or sermons in church or via an online sermon. There are many ways to study and learn from the teachings in the Bible, which can then be applied to your life.
I have learned many principles from The Bible, which I have tried to apply to my own life. I am constantly growing in my faith and obedience to God and His word.
And while it may be difficult sometimes, or it may take me longer to learn certain lessons. I am always trying to build and develop myself to become a better Christian woman.
I would love to hear your experience with learning to read The Bible in the comments below, or if there is anything that you are struggling with?
